Evolving Design to Meet the Community

As 2025 unfolds, I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to how design continues to evolve within our communities, our workplaces, and our lives. The true test of great design demands a high level of self-examination and a willingness to acknowledge our own shortcomings. It means asking tough questions: Why did this project fall short while another succeeded? How can I better serve the people who use these spaces? What are we missing, and how can we do it better?

The one answer that should never be accepted is, “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it.” If you’re not constantly seeking improvement, you’ll never reach your full potential to effect meaningful change or drive innovation. Design evolves through continuous research, critical examination, and collaborative exploration. At its core is a deep desire to elevate the professions of architecture and design. Design shapes how people live, work, interact, and feel. It touches every aspect of human experience.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the workplace. Despite our best intentions to unplug or slow down, the modern professional is always “on.” The boundaries between work and personal life have blurred. Today, four in ten people work 50 or more hours a week. This cultural shift demands a response from design.

Contemporary workplace design reflects this new reality, with spaces built for accidental encounters and collaboration, adaptive furniture that supports individual work styles, and hospitality-driven details that prioritize comfort, wellbeing, and community. The most impactful projects are those that align brand with purpose, enhance productivity, and foster inclusivity.

This thinking has expanded far beyond the office. It’s influencing every corner of design. I’m excited and inspired by the humanity behind this shift. Architects and designers are increasingly understood to do more than make spaces beautiful. They ask the right questions before anything is built.

Great design starts with why, and from there it tells the story of what and where. While aesthetics and function will always matter, the true test of design lies in how people feel within a space. How they move through it, connect in it, and respond to it.

So as we look ahead, let’s keep asking: Where do we go from here? And more importantly, how can we change lives for the better through design?
