The Power of Solar and Green Energy

Several years ago, I had the privilege of being involved in a project that was completely self-sustaining and built using all the elements we associate with green design, including recycling all construction waste for insulation and reuse. I was honored that the client chose to work with me, despite the fact that I did not hold a LEED accreditation at the time. I had to dive deep into research on building envelope components and truly understand what a zero-energy home meant.

With sweeping views of Pikes Peak and the surrounding mountains, we embarked on an extraordinary journey, one that preserved natural resources and minimized carbon impact while executing a beautifully designed home. Not a single design detail was sacrificed.

After the economic collapse, census data revealed a shift. Consumers began returning to city centers and moving away from properties with views like these. The concern was not just cost. It was the growing awareness of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact.

Now, new studies suggest that technology may help solve some of the energy challenges associated with suburban living. Research shows that even conservative suburban homeowners are becoming “accidental environmentalists” thanks to two factors: solar panels and electric or hybrid vehicles.

Installing solar panels helps reduce reliance on the grid and lowers electricity bills. Over time, many homeowners can even produce enough energy to power their electric cars, eliminating gasoline costs entirely. In the not-so-distant future, there may be a real cost advantage to suburban living.

As technology advances, more people are generating their own power, shrinking their carbon footprint, and rediscovering the joy of wide-open spaces. Nature, sustainability, and design excellence can all coexist, and this gives us every reason to keep building with purpose.
