Making the Process Fun

Building or renovating can be stressful. Make sure you’re prepared for the additional responsibility and disruption it may bring to your normal routine. Ask your team what you can do to help make the process go smoothly.

If you’re planning your project around a special event, such as a wedding, and need it completed by a specific date, begin early. For a simple renovation, allow at least six months. For larger projects, start 12 to 18 months in advance. Rushing the process often leads to mistakes and, ultimately, higher costs.

Discuss site security with both your contractor and your insurance agent. Dumpsters, trucks, and portable toilets can signal potential thieves. Have protocols in place to secure materials and belongings. On-site storage trailers are not recommended, as they are common targets. Ensure the site is checked daily at the end of the workday to confirm it is secure. Let nearby neighbors know about your project and ask them to help keep an eye out. Motion detectors and security cameras are affordable and widely used.

Ask your contractor to implement a daily checklist that includes turning off lights, locking all windows and doors, and setting the alarm, if applicable. Respect your neighbors. Contractors may prefer early start times, but local ordinances or neighborhood courtesy may require adjusted hours or restrictions on weekend work. Set clear expectations around cleanliness. Agreeing on job site standards from the beginning helps avoid misunderstandings later.

Avoid micromanaging. While you should always speak up if you’re concerned, trust your professionals to do their jobs. Direct all questions or concerns to the project manager rather than speaking to subcontractors directly.

Keep pets and children off the construction site. Pets can become anxious, and job sites are not safe environments for children.

Avoid adding last-minute “by the way” projects. These unexpected changes can create confusion and disrupt both the budget and the timeline. If you want to add something, notify the project manager. They will provide the cost and timing implications.

Expect to feel both excited and nervous. That’s perfectly normal. The time spent planning will pay off once construction begins.

Enjoy the journey and don’t sweat the small stuff. In the end, what truly matters is creating a space that reflects your personal vision and brings joy every day.
