VIEW FROM THE TOP is a residence designed to capitalize on the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountain ranges and city lights, blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Southwest. The concept of indoor-outdoor living is central to the design, with every room connecting to the exterior in meaningful ways, fostering a continuous dialogue between nature and home.
At the heart of this transformation was the creation of a show-stopping kitchen that not only met the client’s functional needs but also reflected their love for art and color. The kitchen became the focal point of the home—an entertainer’s paradise with a 25-foot granite island backlit to perfection and featuring a hidden TV on a lift. The island, designed to accommodate multiple cooks and provide intimate seating, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain range, golf course, and city lights—making it a perfect space for both entertaining and everyday living.
The home’s challenges were unique, given its location on the side of a mountain. Accessing the site required creativity, as materials had to be delivered using 16-foot trucks and trailers along a winding road. Overcoming these logistical hurdles, JAQUE ensured the home’s design would complement the site’s natural topography while embracing the challenges posed by the steep slope.
Inside, JAQUE worked with the existing flagstone floors, which were over 2 inches thick and spread throughout the interior and exterior. These floors were carefully incorporated into the design, with materials harvested from areas that would be covered by the expansive kitchen island, preserving the integrity of the stone while minimizing patchwork.
One of the home’s defining architectural features was its graceful columns. The clients wished to retain these columns, so JAQUE ingeniously incorporated them into the kitchen design by placing a pantry at the end of the kitchen, with glass doors that allowed the column’s beauty to remain visible while adding texture to the space.
