A Name and Atmosphere Inspired by Craft and Elegance
The name Pearl and the Thief pays homage to two treasures: the whiskey thief—a tool used by master distillers—and the prized pearl of an oyster. JAQUE captured this duality by creating a space that reflects Sutherland’s vision of blending history, Southern warmth, and modern sensuality.
A Southern, Year-Round Color Palette
JAQUE chose a color scheme that exudes warm-weather vibes while transcending seasonality, making the restaurant inviting in summer and cozy in winter.
Crafted Imagery and Design
JAQUE infused the space with visual elements that connect the oyster’s reputation as an aphrodisiac with the sophistication of craft whiskeys, creating an atmosphere that’s both intimate and stylish.
Designing Around Challenges and Enhancing History
Maximizing the Long, Narrow Space
The building’s 24’ x 85’ footprint and immovable original bar presented unique challenges that JAQUE turned into opportunities:
- Banquette Seating: Long walls were lined with soft banquettes, offering flexibility to seat 2 or 12 diners.
- Preserving History: The original bar’s woodwork was retained to tell the story of whiskey while seamlessly blending with modern elements.
Functional and Beautiful Kitchen Layout
A new kitchen at the rear of the restaurant provides a functional workspace while maintaining visibility for guests, emphasizing the farm-to-table concept.
Fresh Oyster Bar and Practicality
JAQUE placed a fresh oyster bar around the perimeter, offering fans a dedicated space to enjoy their favorite delicacies. The rear alley was transformed into a practical area for natural light, a fresh herb garden, and delivery access.
Elevating the Second Floor
JAQUE masterfully utilized the building’s second floor to expand the restaurant’s functionality and charm:
- Preserved Century-Old Bar: The original bar was restored to maintain the historical essence of the space.
- Additional Seating: JAQUE created a dining area with 64 extra seats, perfect for accommodating weekend crowds.
- Soft Lounge Seating: A central area invites patrons to enjoy cocktails and conversation in a relaxed setting.
- Event Flexibility: The entire floor doubles as a private event space for weddings and special occasions.
From Branding to Details: A Complete Vision
JAQUE’s design went beyond interiors, extending to the menus, website, and dishes, ensuring every aspect of Pearl and the Thief reflects the restaurant’s unique identity.
The result? A space where guests can “Sip, Shuck, Repeat” while soaking in the Southern spirit and seafood specialty that defines Pearl and the Thief.
