For their fourth home, a couple sought to merge their love of Europe, the beauty of the mountains, and a home their teenage daughters would find “hip.” The result is a custom residence that seamlessly combines these elements, creating a timeless and modern living space. The home’s Tuscan architecture, while classic, was infused with contemporary design to create a fresh, bold statement.
One of the biggest challenges was working with the home’s open floor plan, which required a thoughtful approach to the kitchen and adjoining spaces. The builder Walker Custom Homes had designed a unique, somewhat unconventional kitchen space, and JAQUE worked to transform it into a functional and visually appealing area that met the clients’ needs for both entertaining and intimate family meals.
The solution was a re-envisioned kitchen space that blends seamlessly with the surrounding living areas, offering ample counter space, a large walk-in pantry, and a custom bar area that flows into the adjacent living and dining areas. The kitchen opens to a covered outdoor dining area, complete with a BBQ grill and a stunning pool with a cabana, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
An awkward hallway was transformed into a functional and elegant butler’s pantry, hidden behind a concealed door, keeping the mess out of sight while offering easy access from the garage. An underutilized dining space was reimagined as a fabulous bar area, and a previously unused travel space became a communal gathering area featuring a beautifully organic table, banquette, and dining chairs.
The design’s use of contrasting materials and textures, such as antique glass and high-gloss finishes, honors both the Tuscan architecture and the clients’ love for European aesthetics, with a fresh, modern twist. A hand-finished Venetian plaster ceiling anchors the space, and an elegant lighting element defines the transition between the kitchen and dining areas.
For the primary suite, JAQUE faced the challenge of integrating the traditional Tuscan elements with the clients’ desire for something more contemporary. The suite’s long linear hallway was designed with eye-catching tile and dramatic lighting to lead into the bedroom,
where the views of the surrounding mountain landscape take center stage. The space incorporates a Japanese soaking tub positioned for the best mountain views, separate vanities, and a spacious shower with steam and separate seating areas for privacy.
The wine room was a key design feature, inspired by the clients’ love of wine and travel. Located under the entry platform, the wine room is accessed through a custom glass floor that allows guests to peer down into the wine cellar below. Designed with acrylic shelving and LED lighting, the wine room holds over 1,000 bottles and features a tasting area for guests to enjoy.
BOTTOM LINE:
This home blends traditional Tuscan architecture with contemporary design to create a family-friendly space that’s sophisticated yet relaxed. The thoughtful design solutions, including the wine room, functional spaces, and luxurious finishes, bring the clients’ vision to life. With JAQUE’s design expertise, this residence stands as a stunning example of modern luxury and timeless elegance.
